For those who worked in Fairfield, SWM, Lake Macquarie and their surrounds, it is with much sadness that I inform you that Inspector Dan SYKES has succumbed to the Black Dog and has passed away.
Dan attempted suicide and was placed on life support but has now passed.
Dan, you were a great guy and great cop.
I am sorry that the black dog wouldn’t let you go for long enough to reach out.
Shattered, such a great calibre of a cop, a colleague you want to have by your side. Funny, supportive and great all round guy, he was a Sgt and did periods of acting Chief Inspector whilst stationed at Newcastle.

Police investigating death after body found in Lake Macquarie creek
POLICE are investigating whether there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a man whose body was discovered this morning in a creek in Lake Macquarie.
POLICE are investigating whether there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a man whose body was discovered this morning in a creek at Lake Macquarie.
Sergeant Dan Sykes said a rower found the body about 7.15am in Cockle Creek in Edgeworth, near the end of Ridley St.
The man appeared to have collapsed while in an aluminium dinghy.

“It appears he has fallen over in the boat and hit his head,” he said.
“He had his head and arms in the water and the rest of his body was in the boat.”
It is understood the man was one of several living in makeshift “humpies” in bush on the other side of the creek.
Locals said the men were known in the area but kept to themselves.
“They have been over there for years,” a resident said.
“One of them is in his 30s, one is in his 40s and one was in his 60s. The one in his 60s hasn’t been well of late.”
Detectives are on scene and a crime scene has been established.
